Teen Abortion: A Blog to Help Girls

{May 31, 2011}   The Fetus and The Mother

The incredible poem “It Rained Last Night“, by Jasmine Mans and Alexis, interested me the first time I saw the video on Youtube. The two girls are arguing back in forth about the pain icaused by an abortion and the thoughts that goes through a mother’s head after having an abortion, with Jasmine acting as the mother and Alexis being the fetus.

Here is a clip of what is said from the Fetus (Alexis) talking.

“It rained last night and I know you could have sworn you saw my face in the rain. And every time it rains near by I want you to imagine that’s how it would’ve sounded if I cried.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViFup3BdiBo

I would also like to add that this poem is NOT about being pro-life , it is sending  a message to young girls that these certain things can happen with any woman and they may feel that there is a voice speakin to them about the abortion.

Reading on the Internet, I ran across an article that discusses many different facts about abortion. This article has different  terms stating what abortion is and shows graphs illustrating some results of abortion. The images go with what the writers will be talking about in the paragraph, so you can get an understanding of what is going on.

Below shows a picture of the Tiger Clinic (left) and a picture of Katie Riemer and a former Media Academy student (right) during a press conference on sex ed.

There are a lot of students who visit the Tiger Clinic for different reasons. Even though the Tiger Clinic does not do abortions, they do help out teens and talk to them about all of the options they have in life and abortion is included if the young girl is pregnant. The nurses and counselors in the clinic are able to help if a young woman or male is going through things related to teen pregnancy or abortion. Katie Riemer, who is the health educator in the Tiger Clinic, discussed with me what she does inside the clinic and other confidential things. Katie talks to young teens about birth control methods and provides them with condoms and other birth control. I think the clinic has good resources for teen girls and boys to help check out their bodies and talk with professionals about other things if needed. Katie told me many things about help for personal experience, the help that she gives is useful to many people even people who aren’t teens. Having the Tiger Clinic here at Fremont is good for many students who need help.

The images below gives a description of teens and pregnancy before adulthood. The left image shows the rate per 1,000 women aged 15-19 who abort pregnancies, the middle images says “1 in 3 teens in the U.S. will be pregnant by age 19,” the right image shows the teen mom book from the show “16 & Pregnant.”

An article I found online shows different topics about teen abortion and essays. Religion may be one reason why teen girls are afraid to talk to their parents about pregnancy. Many religions believe taking away a life is not okay and that it may be an abomination to who they believe in. Involving the parent can seem difficult for a young woman because she is not mentally prepared for what her parents will say.

On the Guttmatcher website, the author Susan A. Cohen discusses that African-American women have the highest rate of abortion in the United States.  In this story, Cohen talks about what she thinks about abortion. I agree with what Cohen is saying here because young women sometimes need people for help when they are pregnant. Pro-life believers tend to talk down about the counselors and the abortionists without a complete understanding of what these young women go through. I recommend people read this because it is an eye-catching story and it states plenty of opinions. Understanding someone’s perspective is also a good thing.

Browsing on the Internet, I ran into a website that discusses the symptoms and a syndrome called Post Abortion Stress Syndrome (PASS), which is a symptom that usually occurs after the woman has an abortion. When reading the material the website provided, I learned a whole lot of things that women can go through and the tough situations they can have. This website talks about pro-life and pro-choice believers, and the opinions of what people think about abortions being done. The stage is another topic that is talked about while dealing with abortion. I not only have more information for my senior project, but I actually enjoyed reading this. They made it understandable and broke down enough information to get a full understanding. I think checking this website was a good option for me to look at for better learning.

A 17-year-old male named Victor Odunikan at Mandela High at the Fremont Federation of High Schools said it was okay to ask a few questions on how he felt about teen abortion. Victor is in the 11th grade as of right now and explains that teen abortion can be okay in different way.

With Victor being a teen male, I thought it would be good to receive his opinion. Here is what he said:

Q. How do you feel about teen girls that have abortions?

A. Because the girls could have gotten pregnant by accident so I think it should be okay to get an abortion if they feel it’s right.

Q. Who do you think should make the decision on getting the abortion? Why?

A. Both parents because they both had parts in creating the fetus and they should see from each others perspective.

Q. Do you think there is some good in abortion?

A. Yes, because in the end the girl will be happy with her life that she doesn’t have to be stressing herself out about the responsibilities of taking care of a baby.

Q. If you weren’t ready to be a father but accidentally got a girl pregnant, what would be your option?

A. I would have a discussion with her about it because I am not ready to be a father and I would ask her to get an  abortion because we both have to grow up before we start a life to raise a child.

Q. Why do you think most teen girls have abortions?

A. Because they can’t handle it and can’t take care of a kid at the moment

Q. Most people think that women are pressured by the mate to get the abortion. Do you think that’s true?

A. In some cases that can be true, but it’s really the girl’s decision even if the male she was with  is nagging her about the situation. Personally, I would not do this I would rather we come to an agreement.

{April 12, 2011}   Teen Abortion Survey Results

At school, I created a survey for the students at Media Academy, grades 9th, 11th, 12th to see what they know about teen abortion and how they feel about it. Interviewing males and females, I received many different types of answers. Going over all of the surveys, I ran into a survey from an 11th grade female who says “abortion is somehow a problem to the society; I think it’s against my religion. If the fetus is more than four months, it becomes a living soul.” Also an 11th grade Catholic male who said “adults in the community should educate teens in school and have classes on sex education for teens.” These answers caught my eye because I had a chance to get results from different religions and see abortion opinions in a different way. I would also like to know what adults feel about teenage girls who are sexually active, and also their opinions on abortions being performed on young girls.

After reading an article that appeared in the New York Times, young teen women who are having abortions. I came to an understanding that this is a difficult decision for young teen women. This article explains how counselors are not to discuss the business of the abortions but to focus on the needs of all of their callers. I believe that this is a good article for everyone to read because whether if you are pro-life or pro-choice, everyone has a decision and people should understand ones perspective on abortion. This may be a personal decision for young women and everyone deserves to be happy with their life.

The map below shows a visual of  how to get to the counseling place called “Exhale” right on 484 Lakepark Avenue #63, Oakland, California 94610 (bubble A identifies the area)

I just read an eye-catching story from the New York Times about how teen pregnancy and abortion is decreasing from the years of 2005-2006 and also went down in 2009. I seem to think about how has pregnancy and abortion changed in California and what is the difference of teen abortion from 2005 to 2011. I would like to know if abortions on teens have gone up more. The story also addresses abstinence until marriage. Why is the emphasis mostly on teens maintaining abstinence, and not on telling teens the proper way to be more safe during sex?
